My APRS Tracker kit, 2010.

Hi guys..!, I'm back in the business again with my new gadget..:P. It's a APRS tracker made in Thailand, since we have been heard all about this tracker had made form oversea like USA, INDIA, our local homebrew..etc. But I've found this tracker just from our neighborhood country it's call EZ tracker.

This EZ tracker was developed & design by their local boys Mr PORNCHAI OLARIKDED aka Paul his callsign e20gjw and its also come with the programming software & firmware. The latest version of his firmware are 0.14B which I've been used that right now. The total cost for this unit + GPS to run this APRS on the move is less than RM260 without radio. hmmm its sound cheap right? so what are you guys watting for..? Ok here are the EZ tracker which belongs to me....enjoy!

This are the component that you need to assembled it.

The GPS is made from Taiwan, you need to terminated the USB connector.

And this is the special unit design by me its a "Junction Terminal Unit" it can works with HT and mobile rig, and its also work with 9V battery.

sorry..this unit never come with the EZ tracker..!

And this are the connection to the radio its 2 in 1.

Another thing I have to homebrew "The Tracker Holder"..hahahah..

My dream HT...Yeasu VX-8R

Well guys at last my dreams came truth, Its Yeasu VX-8R all the while I've been dream to own it finally mine. Although this model just only a year in Malaysia market I think I'm not to late to owned it. I received this HT yesterday and I try to master the function but it seem like this little tiny HT with a big function..! The manual shown about 168 pages will make my head goes round :P. But I've tried to set it with help by the manual book. Hmmm looks like I already feel the touch..all function is on the dial knob only, just twist it walla!! As for now crazy to buy the GPS unit for fully utilize this HT. Need to survey the market price for this GPS unit because not many people using the HT with GPS unit. So I think this VX-8R is the final HT I'm gonna owned..NO MORE HT FOR ME..! unless...Hmmmm :P

My new toy...CB radio Midland 40 channel

Sorry it's been late post for this article, supposedly it posted before I posted up my yagi antenna..but how cares? as long that I can share it with you all guys....so lets start with the story.

4 element yagi beam (portable/fix)

Hi guys I'm back again..this time during my free time homebrew 4 element yagi with gamma match. Its been quite a long time I never hold my tool box but recently my hand so itchy ..hahahah. So come out with this homebrew thingy again..!!! For this antenna I've spend around less than rm50 I guess..! and it takes about 2 days only guys...WTF?...so cut the crap and let me start with the journey of this antenna....

This are the main stuff I used for the yagi....

My work station, house main dining table...hahaha, cutting the element & fix into a boom.

80% almost ready...dr1, 2 & driven ele with gamma match done..!

A few cable clips attached at the boom...

Walla DONE...standing like a handsome guy...hahaha..

this is the gamma match stub that you can adjust your SWR according to frequency you wanna TX...

The moment that I've been waiting for..so suspen wor!!..(SWR Checking) But....

surprisely all tested under 1.5..yeahh!

146 = 1.25

147 = 1.3

Yahoo it's all done for now...very happy lor...but abit pening lalat coz tested inside the house dude...hahahah

This antenna ready to launch anytime during DXpedition, RACEs, as a event station, base fix preferred at the roof top.

Malaysian Nation Wide Light House Weekend 2009 (MLHW 09)

Hi guys I'm back again with amateur radio program, even now days I'm so busy with my business but I need a break with my hobby.

This event is not a contest, there are no prizes or any other enticements to participate and is therefore free of charge. And also promote public awareness of ham radio and lighthouses in Malaysia. To gain experience for DX-peditions for the Ham Radio operators and to promote “exotic” Malaysia among International DXCC chasers or seekers.

Wanted: Volunteers for May 2nd ARDF Event [Penang]

We are looking for volunteers for the coming Penang ARDF event.

1. Fox team.
Responsible for the individual fox beacons to located in the fox dens which will confuse the hunters. They will directly report to the chief fox marshal. The success of your job is how and where you hide the beacon, such that the hunters will be barking up the wrong tree, resulting that they waste a lot of time to locate your beacon.
As the saying goes, “So near and yet so far”.

2. Start / End Marshals and helpers.
Will coordinate the way the hunters are released into the hunting ground and record the hunters when they reach the “Finish” line. Time Keepers. Field Photographers. Arrange transport of the competitors and fox team to the locations, and general matters.

3. F&B Manager.
Responsible to arrange refreshments for the hunters when they reach the “Finish” line.
Assist to coordinate the Fellowship Dinner and prize giving.

4. First Aid Field Station.
Set up and provide any first aid assistance to the competitors for cuts, bruises, stings etc.

ARDF Training Fox Hunt - Penang

Hi guys I'm back again since quite a while been sleep from this blog...hahah.
Back again with my activities in 2009,

Calling to all Penangties hunters!

There will be a No Frills ARDF Training Hunt on this coming Sunday 8th Morning.

Date : Sunday Morning . 8th March 2009.
Time : 9:00 am
Venue : Botanical Gardens, Penang.
Meet up at the car park next to Kraft Batik Sdn Bhd.
Mode : VHF F2A
Freq. : 144.5/144.8 MHz

Note : This is a no frills hunt. Bring your own drinks and hunting equipment.

Purpose:

Let the foxes out for fresh air after being in hibernation through the winter period.
To test and calibrate new hunting equipments.
Re-evaluate the two or three difficult fox dens which had been giving much difficulties in the past hunts.
Map reading - Orienteering. ( Compass and map required )
Opportunity for new comers to try out ARDF under non-competition conditions.
(Chance to have hands-on feel in this radiosport)

Penang Starwalk 2008 duty

Penang Starwalk entered its 31st year with nearly 14,000 participants flagged off at the Penang International Sports Arena at 7am Sunday. As usual I'm on duty for radio communication on that event to support our St John crew.

1. First turn from starting line flag off. (station 1)

2. I'm using my scooter with 5/8 antenna operated at station 1.

ITU Asia-Pacific Centres of Excellence Training Workshop on Effective Use of Telecommunications/ICT in Response to Disasters: Reports

24-28, November 2008.

Over 100 participants including country delegates, speakers, and local participants attended the Training Workshop. Of the total number, 31 international participants were from 22 countries while 62 local participants were from Malaysia.

The Training Workshop focused on concepts and hands-on training on various technologies and applications such as satellite communications, radio communication, Internet-base applications and etc. which are applicable and suitable for deployment aiming at facilitating rescue and relief operations in emergencies and especially in the aftermath of disasters. The Training Workshop aimed at:

Making awareness and demonstrate telecommunication technology options, facilities and services applicable for use in response to disasters or emergencies especially in disaster relief operations;
Providing practical experience to participants in using the telecommunication/ICT facilities and services for disaster relief operations;
Strengthening partnerships in disaster relief among international agencies/organizations, NGOs, Industry, and governments as well as encourage roles of public sector or NGOs e.g. radio amateurs, volunteers, etc.; and,
Identifying issues, gaps in countries in order to find ways for improvements or overcoming the issues or challenges.

During the hands-on training, system demonstrations were made to the participants who were also given opportunities to try out voice and data communications over the satellite and radiocommunication as well as through the Internet. In addition, a group of amateur radio voluntarily coming from different places of Malaysia helped demonstrate set up of various types of radio equipment such as HF, VHF, UHF and applications over the radio links.

Penang Bridge International Marathon 2008

ITU Asia-Pacific Centres of Excellence Training Workshop on Effective Use of Telecommunications/ICT in Response to Disasters: Saving Lives

International Telecommunication Union (ITU), with financial support from the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE), Australian Government, and jointly with the ITU ASP Centre of Excellence (CoE) Network UUM Node in Malaysia, and the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications (MEWC), Government of Malaysia, is organizing a five-day “ITU Asia-Pacific Centres of Excellences Training Workshop on Effective Use of Telecommunications/ICT in Response to Disasters: Saving Lives". The Training Workshop will provide hands-on training on deployment and use of various telecommunication/ICT equipment and facilities such as satellite terminals, amateur radio, ad-hoc wireless networks, and VSAT. The training will also focus on vital ICT applications such as GIS and tele-medicine used in relief operations.

The Training Workshop focuses on concepts and hands-on training on various technologies and applications applicable and suitable for deployment aiming at facilitating rescue and relief operations in emergencies and especially in the aftermath of disasters. The Training Workshop aims to:

*Make awareness and demonstrate telecommunication technology options, facilities and services applicable for use in response to disasters or emergencies especially in disaster relief operations;

2. Issues and challenges in applying telecommunications/ICTs for all phases of disaster management.

3. Existence of policy, regulation, and plan concerned to communications for emergencies and disasters.

4. Recommendations for action plans and ways forwards.

To register for the Training Workshop, participants are kindly requested to complete the attached registration form and send it to wisit.atipayakoon@itu.int by 7 November 2008 at the latest. ITU will provide one full fellowship covering air ticket and daily subsistence allowance (DSA), to ITU Member Administrations or authorized nominations. Kindly fill in the attached fellowship request form with all complete details and send it with your registration form. Due to limited seats and budget availability, the fellowships will be awarded on a first come first served basis and priority shall be given to Least Developed Countries and Low-Income Developing Countries and to candidates submitting a country paper or presentation for the workshop.

ICOM OPC-478 Data Cable Replacement (Homebrew).

recently managed to get hold of (at very reasonable cost) an ICOM IC-F4GS PMR Radio (2-way walkie talkie) which had previously been used for (what I would imagine to be) nightclub security. No-doubt the bouncer who owned this had swapped it for a lightweight unit and an earpiece. The radio had three programmed frequencies.

So I have this great ICOM radio - Wow! Now what? Only having three channels programmed into it on unknown frequencies makes it pretty useless. So . . . I wanted to be able to re-program this radio for my own use on PMR446, and also perhaps the 70cm Amateur Bands.These radios are not programmable using the buttons on the front - You must program them using a PC, with specific software and a suitable cable.
The correct data cable for this radio (and for the IC-F3 radios too) was the OPC-478. I didn't fancy buying this cable. Getting it shipped over from a seller in China would cost £20-£25 (and a lot more it I got it from an official Icom retailer!) so I thought I would have a go at making the link cable myself.

Here is the circuit I used, with connection notes for a DB9, 9 pin serial plug.

The Data connection to the ICOM radio is via a 3.5mm Stereo socket, which is also used as the speaker / headphone socket. As you can see, the centre 'ring' of the plug is used as the data ('To Radio') and the connection to Ground is the outer. The centre 'top' pin is not used.

Similar to the Port Keyer that I had already built, I decided to build the entire circuit so it would fit neatly into the DB9 plastic housing. I knew that this would not be a straightforward exercise due to the amount of components I would need to fit into such a small space.

To save space, I decided to mount the two capacitors on the reverse side of the board.

Just for accuracy and completeness of the notes on this Webpage, it is worth pointing out that I exchanged the 1uF DC smoothing capacitor in the circuit for a 0.47uF one. This was due to not being able to fit a 1uF Electrolytic easily in the package. I also exchanged the 2, 33K resistors for 22K ones. This was just due to me having some spare miniature 22K resistors. These form the potential divider to Q1 and are not critical values.

I had to cut, trim, and melt the inside area of the plastic housing so that this circuit board would fit into it.The two parts of the housing would then be glued together.

As for the software needed - The correct software to use is ICOM's CS-F3G program (CSF3G).Here is the screen display of the software with the 8 Standard PMR channels programmed in.Note that the software is copyright and the property of ICOM. It is, however, available in several locations on the Internet.

Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) ada la satu software percuma untuk windows, program ini menyediakan kawalan computer yang kebiasanya digunakan oleh radio HF. Ham Radio Dulux juga disertakan dengan peta, statellite tracking dan juga digital mode yang lain iaitu Digital Master 780 (DM780) anda boleh muat turun software ini disini .
Untuk tutorial kali ini saya lebih menumpukan kepada software Digital Master 780 yang di sertakan sekali di dalam package HRD ini. Memandangkan kebanyakan rakan amatur di Malaysia ini tidak memiliki Rig HF yang ada dalam senarai software, ini tidak bermakna anda ketinggalan untuk turut serta dalam mode digital di jalur VHF.
Untuk pengetahuan anda band plan amateur 144.000Mhz - 148.000Mhz telah memperuntukan sedikit ruang untuk kita mencuba mode digital ini, yang selalunya sunyi dari kita gunakan berikut adalah chanel list band plan digital yang digunakan di Malaysia.

Here we go, the full digital interface in a box...once you plug it the connector you no need to unplug it anymore from your rig. Its only using a switch to change it your digital mode to a FM mode. Terima kasih.

Penang ARDF meeting reports - Oct 12th 2008

A meeting session was held to discuss and chart the further growth of ARDF activities in the Northern Region. About 20 persons attended this session conducted by Mr Lim 9M2LC. During the brefing he shown us all the pictures he took from the last event ARDF championship at Korea.
Its was so much thing that i learn during the brefing, some more met up with a new station over there.

Di kesempatan ini saya ingin mengucapkan Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri kepada semua rakan-rakan Ham dan juga rakan-rakan yang melawati blog saya ini. Sebulan kita berpuasa di bulan Ramadhan akhirnya kita menyambut kemenangan di bulan Syawal.

During this raya time nothing much that i celebrate it, the only thing is to gather up all family and minta ampun dan bermaaf-maafan. But the bes part is, this is the first raya that i had an official callsign as amateur radio operator. Banyak kenangan manis semasa aku beraya dengan adanya callsign. Dan banyak jugak aku bertemu & QSO dengan rakan-rakan ham semasa menyambut hari raya. This the memorable moment in my life as as a ham. I was in KL during raya time, manage to met a few satation from terotorey of gombak when eyeball qso with them.

Last but not least...don't be sad cheear up and enjoy yourself during this raya time, BUT dnt forget our almighty ALLAH!

My Field Strength Meter

This Field Strength Meter has been specially designed for our FM bugs. It is capable of detecting very low power transmitters and will assist enormously in peaking many of our FM transmitters that have a coil in the output stage that can be adjusted for optimum output.

How to Call CQ on Amateur Band

Calling CQ on the Ham Bands means you want to talk to any station anywhere that might be listening. If you call CQ, be prepared for anyone to answer. You may get lucky and snag a foreign(DX)station. If you want to work foreign stations(DX) call CQ DX. This lets stateside stations know not to answer your call

Here are the steps...

STEP 1
Look for a clear frequency by transmitting by asking "Is this frequency in use". If on CW, use QRL? Wait 30 seconds or so then transmit the same message again. If the frequency is clear, proceed to step 2.

STEP 2
Start your call- CQ CQ CQ Calling CQ. This is (your call sign)calling. Repeat this three times. It should look like this:

"CQ CQ CQ Calling CQ this is 9W2WOC from Penang Malaysia CQ calling on 10 meters!"

"CQ CQ CQ this is 9M2??? / 9W2???"
"CQ CQ CQ this is 9M2??? / 9W2???"
"CQ CQ CQ this is 9M2??? / 9W2??? from Penang Malaysia CQ calling on 10 meters and standby for a call"

STEPS 3
Now wait 30 to 60 seconds. If no one answers, start again.
If a station comes back to you but you are not sure of the his or her call sign, do not use the cw prosign of QRZ? That means "Is there a station calling me?" Rather, use standard English of "Please again with your call sign" If necessary, use the standard military phonetic alphabet of give your call sign. For example, a call sign of W8XXX would be "whiskey 8 x-ray, x-ray, x-ray over" Do not use fancy or unfamiliar phonetics that may not be understood by the calling station.
